The Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF), in association with primary sponsors Zoo York, Vans, HBO and Camp Woodward, is proud to announce the 5th Annual Harold Hunter Day will take place Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the L.E.S. Skatepark in New York City.

Established in 2006 after Harold’s untimely passing, and managed by the non-profit Harold Hunter Foundation, Harold Hunter Day V will once again unite NYC’s tight-knit skate community for a positive day of skateboarding, camaraderie and remembrance.

Harold Hunter was a legendary New Yorker with a larger-than-life personality and altruistic nature that enabled him to touch the lives of countless people around the world. Each year HH Day commemorates a life well lived by celebrating the things Harold loved most – skateboarding, music, friends, family, and of course, New York City.

“I look forward to celebrating five years of remembering Harold’s life at this year’s HH Day,” says Steve Rodriguez, 5boro Skateboards Founder and Harold Hunter Foundation Board Member. “Ever since I participated in my first HHF project years ago, I knew it was an organization I wanted to continue working with.  The impact that the HHF has on the kids involved is simply too great to not be a part of it.”

On Saturday afternoon, November 12th, Harold Hunter Day V will kick off at the L.E.S Skatepark on the corner of Pike and Monroe Streets under the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown. An all-ages skate jam will run from 1:00–5:00pm and feature product giveaways, appearances by pro skateboarders, live music from DJ Smoke L.E.S., and pop-up “Best Trick” contests with prizes including a one-year supply of *Zoo York apparel and other gear from event sponsors.

Immediately following the skate jam, an after-party will be held at Max Fish located at 178 Ludlow Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The gathering will be open to the public (21+ only) with live beats provided by DJ Smoke L.E.S. and friends.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Harold Hunter Foundation relies on support from the skate community and related affiliates to achieve its mission of using skateboarding as a vehicle to provide inner-city youth with valuable life experiences that nurture individual creativity, resourcefulness and the development of life skills.

With this principal goal in mind, a limited edition Harold Hunter Day V t-shirt designed by Mark Nardelli from 5boro, and a skateboard deck crafted by Sam Wilson from With A Mouse Design, will be sold at the event with proceeds benefiting the Harold Hunter Foundation. Both items will also be available post-event at select New York skateshops.

Harold Hunter Day V is made possible through generous support from event sponsors Zoo York, Vans, HBO, Camp Woodward, Supreme, Cottonmouth, ProSport Wellness, SHUT, Paradox, BONES Wheels, Bones Bearings, With A Mouse Design, Prographix, The Professionals: NYC Sound Company, and the collective New York City skateboard community.

Let us know if you plan to attend on Facebook.

*One-year supply of Zoo York apparel includes 20 t-shirts, 10 button downs, 5 hoodies, and assorted shorts & denim.

For Immediate Release:

NEW YORK, NY; August 19, 2011 – The non-profit, youth-focused Harold Hunter Foundation (HHF) is proud to announce that action sports industry veteran and NYC local, Steve Rodriguez, is the newest member of its Board of Directors.

Widely recognized as one of the most dedicated and influential skateboard advocates in New York City, Steve is the founder of 5boro Skateboards. For more than 15 years, he has played a major role in shaping the greater NYC skate scene through direct involvement with various municipal agencies and city officials.

In 2004, Steve spearheaded the re-building and re-zoning of the legendary Brooklyn Banks to become a skatepark officially recognized by the City of New York. Last year he consulted on the design, development and construction of the Maloof Cup Skatepark and Astoria Skate Plaza in Queens, as well as the River Avenue Skatepark in the Bronx. Additionally, every June 21st he runs the NYC chapter of Go Skateboarding Day which attracts thousands of local skateboarders and receives international coverage.

Steve’s most recent contribution to the New York skate scene is the prestigious Nike GAMECHANGERS grant that he was awarded through Architecture for Humanity this past Spring. The purpose of the grant is to encourage community organizations to empower youth through sports by executing programs that spur social and economic community development.

In this spirit, Steve is currently putting the Nike GAMECHANGERS grant to good use by working closely with the collective NYC skate community to re-design and re-construct Chinatown’s popular L.E.S./Manhattan Bridge Skatepark, as well as the surrounding Coleman Oval Park. The new-and-improved skatepark is expected to open in late 2011.

Steve’s unwavering passion for skateboarding, his appreciation for what Harold stood for, and the countless relationships he maintains within the larger action sports industry make him an extremely valuable addition to the Harold Hunter Foundation. His leadership, guidance and experience will strengthen the HHF on many levels and enable the organization to make great strides in the years ahead.

“I’m excited to join the Harold Hunter Foundation because I strongly believe in its philosophy and I’ve seen first-hand how skateboarding can positively impact the lives of at-risk kids,” Steve says. “It’s really tough to make it as a skateboarder in New York, so I’m always looking for ways to support our local kids and skate scene. My goal is to get the HHF involved with more events and programs that will naturally lead to mentorship opportunities with kids who have lots of potential, but need some guidance to get on the right track.”

Steve Rodriguez, founder and co-owner of 5boro Skateboards, was recently awarded the prestigious Nike GAMECHANGERS grant through Architecture for Humanity.  In conjunction with the NYC skate community, the grant will be used to re-design and re-construct the L.E.S./Coleman Oval/Manhattan Bridge Skatepark.

At 5:00pm on Saturday, May 14th, a community design session will be held at the skatepark which is located underneath the Manhattan Bridge on the corner of Cherry and Pike Streets in Chinatown.  The meeting is open to the general public and all are welcome to attend and voice their ideas concerning the re-design of the skatepark as well as their larger vision for the surrounding Coleman Oval Park.  If you are planning to attend, please show your support on the Facebook event page.

Whether you attend this weekend’s event or not, Steve and Architecture for Humanity would like everyone to fill out the L.E.S./Coleman Oval/Manhattan Bridge Skatepark survey which is available by clicking here.  The more background info and feedback they collect, the better the re-design will turn out.  So it’s very important that YOU get involved!
